Industry Local SEO: How Search Behavior Differs by Trade
A homeowner whose air conditioning died at 2pm in August and a homeowner considering Invisalign are both "local searches." They have almost nothing…
Read article →That is the actual starting position for this decision, so let us treat it as the starting position.
To hire an SEO company well, you need three things: a clear picture of what the market actually charges, a short list of questions that separate operators from salespeople, and a way to tell whether the work is producing anything two months in. This page covers all three, and it names the price ranges published in 2026 industry surveys rather than dodging the question.
Local SEO for a small business typically runs between $500 and $2,500 per month in 2026, with most legitimate local programs landing in the $1,000 to $2,500 range. Full-service SEO retainers across all business sizes average considerably higher, around $3,200 per month, but that figure is pulled up by national and enterprise campaigns that have nothing to do with a Pembroke Pines contractor.
The published surveys disagree with each other, and the disagreement itself is informative.
| Source | Sample | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs pricing poll | 439 SEO providers | Average agency retainer $3,209/mo; most common range $501 to $2,000 |
| GoodFirms survey (Apr–May 2026) | 300+ agencies | 48% charge $1,500 to $5,000/mo; 43.3% charge under $1,500 |
| Clutch | 65,000+ listed firms | Average $3,199/mo |
| Ahrefs, by provider type | Same poll | Freelancers average roughly $1,349/mo |
Three things follow from that spread. First, there is no single correct price. Second, "local SEO" and "SEO" are different products at different prices, and some agencies quote the second while selling the first. Third, if a quote is far outside every one of these ranges in either direction, ask why.
One more current detail worth knowing before you negotiate: SE Ranking's 2026 agency survey found 56.2% of agencies raised rates going into 2026, and GoodFirms found that among agencies raising prices, 37% cited AI search optimization work as the reason. If your 2024 quote and your 2026 quote differ significantly, that is an industry-wide shift rather than one company being opportunistic.
Nothing that will move your visibility. The math does not support real work at that price, and it is worth being direct about it.
At $300 a month a provider can afford roughly two hours of attention. Two hours buys a report. It does not buy a category audit, a NAP cleanup across 20 directories, a service page, a review system, and monitoring. What you typically receive is an automated rank-tracking PDF and a handful of directory submissions to sites nobody uses.
This is the single most common reason a Broward owner tells us "SEO is a scam." They did not buy SEO. They bought a report.
Ask these in a first call. The answers tell you more than any case study deck.

Question 8 is the one that separates people. An operator has an answer. A salesperson does not.
A promise of specific positions. Nobody controls Google's results, and no legitimate provider guarantees a position. The same now applies to AI answers. Anyone promising that ChatGPT will recommend you is describing an outcome they do not own.
Ownership of your accounts. If the agency registers your domain, builds your site on their proprietary platform, or claims your Google Business Profile under their own account, leaving becomes expensive by design. Ownership should be yours from day one, in writing.
A 12-month contract with a 90-day cancellation clause. Long terms are not automatically wrong, since local SEO genuinely takes months to compound. Long terms with no exit are.
No mention of AI search. In 2026 this is a meaningful omission. AI Overviews and assistant recommendations now sit above and sometimes instead of the results a traditional program targets. A proposal that ignores them is optimizing for a shrinking surface. Our AI search visibility hub covers why the two are scored separately.
Reporting that leads with impressions. Impressions are not calls. If the monthly report opens with traffic and never reaches leads, the metrics were chosen to look good rather than to be useful.
The AI Visibility Snapshot™ scores you across Google, Maps, your website, your competitors and AI tools, then gives you a prioritised 90-day roadmap.
Get My Snapshot →You should not have to wait a year to know. You should also not expect leads in week three.
By day 30, the technical and profile foundation should be visibly different: Google Business Profile categories and services corrected, NAP inconsistencies identified and being fixed, a documented plan with priorities in order. If nothing on your profile or site has changed in 30 days, ask what has been happening.
By day 60, you should see movement in leading indicators. More keywords appearing in the top 20. Pages getting indexed. Review volume climbing if that was part of scope. Google Business Profile views and calls trending up.
By day 90, you should see the first lagging indicators. Calls or form fills attributable to organic search. Map Pack positions improving for at least some queries from at least some parts of Pembroke Pines.
If month 4 arrives with no movement in any leading indicator, that is a real conversation, not a patience problem.
It is worth naming this because most agencies will not.
If you opened three months ago with no customers and no reviews, this is not your problem yet. Build the reviews and the referrals first. If you need leads in the next 30 days, Google Ads or Local Service Ads will do that and SEO will not. If you are unwilling to supply photos, answer questions about your services, or approve content, no agency can manufacture the specificity that local search now rewards.
And if your phone is ringing as much as you can handle, spending on visibility is premature.
The cheapest useful step before hiring anyone, including us, is finding out where you actually stand. Not what an agency says is wrong, but what is observably true across Google, Maps, your website, your trust signals, and AI tools.
That is what the AI Visibility Snapshot is. A 5-Signal scorecard, a comparison against two or three visible Broward County competitors, and a prioritized 90-day roadmap. The roadmap is yours to act on with us or without us, and it works as an independent check on an agency you already have.
