Why Is My Business Not Showing Up on Google Maps?
There is a version of this problem where you are ranked low, and a version where you are not in the running at all. They feel identical from the…
Read article →You have been in business for 18 years. Your reviews are better than the company three miles east. And when someone standing in a Pembroke Pines driveway searches for what you do, that company shows up in the top three and you do not.

Google Maps ranking is decided by three factors Google states publicly: relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is how well your Google Business Profile matches the search. Distance is how close you are to the searcher. Prominence is how well known and well corroborated your business is across the web. You cannot change distance. You can change the other two, and most businesses in Broward County have barely started.
This page is the hub for everything we publish on Google Maps and the Local Pack. It explains how the ranking actually works, why Pembroke Pines is a harder market than its size suggests, and the order to fix things in.
Google scores every nearby business on relevance, distance, and prominence, then shows the three that score highest for that specific search from that specific spot. The score is recalculated for every query, so your position changes with the searcher's location, the exact words they typed, and the time of day.
That last point causes more confusion than anything else. There is no single "Google Maps ranking" for your business. There is a ranking for a given query from a given point on the map, and it is different two miles away.
Relevance comes mostly from your Google Business Profile: primary category, secondary categories, services with real descriptions, business description, attributes, and how completely the profile is filled out.
Primary category does the heaviest lifting. A dental practice that selects "Health" instead of "Dentist" will lose to a competitor with the precise category, regardless of how good the practice is. The same applies to a contractor who picks "Contractor" instead of "Roofing Contractor."
Distance is proximity between the searcher and your listed address or service area. It is the only one of the three you cannot influence, and it explains most of the "why do I rank at my shop but not at my house" confusion.
In Broward this matters more than in most markets. Pembroke Pines, Miramar, Cooper City, Davie, and Hollywood sit within a 15-minute drive of each other. A single business address can be genuinely competitive in three of those markets and invisible in the other two, purely on geometry.
Prominence is Google's measure of how well established and well corroborated your business is. It draws on review volume and recency, citation consistency across directories, links to your business from other websites, and your website's own authority.
This is the part owners underestimate. Prominence comes substantially from off your Business Profile. A perfectly filled out profile with no website presence behind it is competing with one hand tied.
A business with a weaker website often outranks a stronger one because Google Maps rewards profile completeness, review activity, and information consistency more directly than it rewards site design. Prominence is built from many small confirmations across the web, not from how the homepage looks.

In practice, the competitor beating you in the Map Pack is usually not a better operator. They are simply easier for Google to verify. More recent reviews. Categories that match the query exactly. The same phone number on 20 directories instead of two different ones. Photos uploaded this quarter rather than in 2022.
That is a frustrating thing to hear when you know your work is better. It is also good news, because none of it is out of reach.
These are the failures we see most often in Broward County audits, in the order worth checking them.
Our full guide on why your business is not showing up on Google Maps works through each of these as a diagnostic sequence.
The bar customers apply has moved sharply, and it moved in one year. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, a representative panel of 1,002 US adults, found that 97% of consumers read reviews before choosing a local business, 68% now require a minimum of 4 stars (up from 55% the previous year), and 47% will not consider a business with fewer than 20 reviews.
Recency carries nearly as much weight as the rating. A 4.9-star profile whose last review arrived 14 months ago reads as a business that may have stopped operating.
There is a second shift in the same survey that matters more for Broward businesses than the star ratings. Use of AI tools for local recommendations jumped from 6% to 45%, while Google's share as a review platform dropped from 83% to 71%. The Map Pack is no longer the only shortlist your customer sees.
Ranking in the Local Pack and being named in an AI answer are scored by different systems, and winning one does not deliver the other. A Whitespark study found AI Overviews appear on 68% of local business queries while the local pack appears on only 39% of the same searches.
For question-shaped searches the gap widens further. Queries like "how long does a permit take in Pembroke Pines" or "average cost of a tile roof in South Florida" resolve inside an AI answer almost every time, and no map appears at all.
The work overlaps heavily. Accurate categories, consistent NAP, recent reviews, and a clear website feed both systems. But you have to check both, because you can hold a top-3 map position and be entirely absent from the AI answer for the same query. That relationship is covered on the AI search visibility hub.
The AI Visibility Snapshot™ scores you across Google, Maps, your website, your competitors and AI tools, then gives you a prioritised 90-day roadmap.

| Order | Fix | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Verification, suspensions, duplicate listings | These remove you from results entirely, not partially |
| 2 | Primary and secondary categories | Highest-impact relevance field, takes 10 minutes |
| 3 | Services, description, attributes, hours, photos | Completes the relevance picture |
| 4 | NAP consistency across every directory | Foundation for prominence, and for AI verification |
| 5 | Review volume, recency, and response rate | Slowest to build, so start it early and run it always |
| 6 | Website service and service-area pages | Supports prominence and gives AI tools something to cite |
Steps 1 through 3 are a single afternoon. Steps 4 through 6 are a quarter. Anyone selling you step 6 before step 1 is not diagnosing, they are producing deliverables.
No agency controls Google Maps rankings, and anyone offering a guaranteed top-3 position is describing an outcome they do not control. Distance alone can keep you out of results in a neighboring city no matter how good your profile is.
Adding keywords to your business name is the specific shortcut worth naming, because it does work briefly and it is explicitly against Google's Business Profile guidelines. Profiles have been suspended for it. If a competitor in Broward is doing it, report it rather than copying it.
Search your main service plus "Pembroke Pines" on your phone, from your business, then again from a customer's neighborhood two towns over. Note who appears in the top 3 both times. Then look at their review counts and their primary category.
That five-minute exercise tells you whether you have a relevance problem, a prominence problem, or a distance problem. Each one has a different fix, and confusing them wastes months.
If you would rather see all of it scored, including how you compare to two or three visible Broward competitors and where AI tools place you, that is what the AI Visibility Snapshot covers.
